Die Einrichtung eines Katastrophenfonds im Jahr 2004\/05 und die daraus resultierenden finanziellen Mittel sowie die kompetente Zusammenarbeit mit der PRAJNANA MISSION erm\u00f6glichen es HAND IN HAND, f\u00fcr eine effiziente Notversorgung sowie eine wirkungsvolle und nachhaltige Hilfe bei Naturkatastrophen und anderen Notsituationen sorgen zu k\u00f6nnen.     Im Sp\u00e4therbst 1999 brach \u00fcber den ostindischen Bundesstaat Odisha ein Zyklon mit Flutwellen unglaublichen Ausma\u00dfes herein. Millionen Menschen waren betroffen, Zehntausende verloren ihr Leben, und unz\u00e4hlige Kinder blieben als Halb- oder Vollwaisen zur\u00fcck. Eine Handvoll engagierter Menschen in Europa wollte Hilfe leisten: Das war der Beginn von HAND IN HAND.<\/p>\n

    Die Organisation f\u00fcr humanit\u00e4re Hilfe wurde im M\u00e4rz 2000 in Wien\/\u00d6sterreich gegr\u00fcndet. Das erste Gesundheitszentrum wurde er\u00f6ffnet, die Planung der Balashram Internatsschule nahm Fahrt auf und ebenso die Gr\u00fcndung von weiteren HAND IN HAND Organisationen in Europa und den USA.<\/p>\n

    2004<\/h2>\n

    Bei der Tsunami-Katastrophe im Dezember 2004 verloren abermals Tausende Menschen ihr Leben. Rasche Hilfe konnte durch einen sofortigen Spendenaufruf geleistet werden. Dieser f\u00fchrte auch zur Errichtung des Katastrophenfonds von HAND IN HAND.<\/p>\n

    Im September dieses Jahres f\u00fchrte der unaufh\u00f6rliche Regen zum m\u00e4chtigen Anschwellen des Mahanadi Flusses und seiner Nebenarme. Gro\u00dfe Fl\u00e4chen von Odisha wurden \u00fcberflutet. Die Folge waren mindestens 29 Tote und sage und schreibe rund vier Millionen Betroffene. Mehr als eine halbe Million Menschen mussten ihre D\u00f6rfer verlassen.<\/p>\n

    Die PRAJANA MISSION organisierte sofortige Ma\u00dfnahmen und versorgte viele Bewohner:innen mit dem Notwendigsten. Nach der Katastrophe leistete HAND IN HAND Hilfe beim Wiederaufbau von Schulen und Wohngeb\u00e4uden sowie bei der Wiederbepflanzung von Nutzfl\u00e4chen.<\/p>\n

    Anhaltende Regenf\u00e4lle in Chhattisgarh lie\u00dfen den Wasserspiegel des Hirakud Reservoirs bedrohlich ansteigen, sodass im September 2011 in der Anlage 59 der 98 Stautore ge\u00f6ffnet werden mussten. Dies hatte in 19 der 30 Bezirke Odishas \u00dcberflutungen zur Folge und betraf rund zwei Millionen Menschen. F\u00fcr eine rasche Ersthilfe verteilte HAND IN HAND Notfall-Pakete mit Trockennahrung und einer \u00dcberlebensausr\u00fcstung mit Decken, Kleidung, Hygieneartikeln etc. Sobald es die zur\u00fcckgehenden Fluten erlaubten, wurden notfallmedizinische Camps errichtet. Au\u00dferdem konnten 1.900 Weidetiere durch HAND IN HAND-Hilfe versorgt werden.<\/p>\n

    2012<\/h2>\n

    Nur Frauen, Kinder und \u00e4ltere Dorfbewohner waren da, als in dem abgelegenen Dorf Sanaphakana Nagaspur pl\u00f6tzlich ein Feuer ausbrach. Die M\u00e4nner des Dorfes waren als Tagel\u00f6hner in den nahegelegenen St\u00e4dten besch\u00e4ftigt. Doch auch sie h\u00e4tten das schnell um sich greifende Feuer nicht aufhalten k\u00f6nnen, da es im ganzen Dorf nur eine einzige Wasserpumpe gab. Die anwesenden Dorfbewohner:innen konnten indes nur hilflos zusehen, wie alle mit Stroh gedeckten H\u00e4user in Flammen aufgingen \u2013 und mit ihnen auch die Erntevorr\u00e4te! \u00dcbrig blieben nur ein paar Ziegelw\u00e4nde. Nach einer ersten Notversorgung konnte das Dorf mit Hilfe von HAND IN HAND wieder aufgebaut werden.<\/p>\n

    Der gigantische Zyklon \u201ePhailin\u201d erreichte am 12. Oktober mit Windgeschwindigkeiten bis zu 200 Stundenkilometern die Ostk\u00fcste Indiens und verursachte dort gro\u00dffl\u00e4chige \u00dcberflutung und Zerst\u00f6rung. Das Ganze wurde durch den starken Regen noch dramatisch versch\u00e4rft. Es folgte eine der gr\u00f6\u00dften Evakuierungen in Indiens Regionen. Denn der tropische Sturm hatte ganze Arbeit geleistet. D\u00e4cher wurden von H\u00e4usern geweht, Tausende von H\u00fctten von der Flut weggewaschen. In vielen Gegenden gab es keinen Strom und keine Telefonverbindung. Die Verantwortlichen der Prajnana Mission besichtigten die Notstandsgebiete und halfen rasch. Sie errichteten Erste-Hilfe-Camps ebenso wie Camps zur Versorgung von Tieren.<\/p>\n

    2017<\/h2>\n

    Im Juli kam es aufgrund heftiger Regenf\u00e4lle in vielen Teilen Indiens zu starken \u00dcberflutungen. In zahlreichen Bezirken zerst\u00f6rten \u00dcberschwemmungen und Erdrutsche Br\u00fccken, Stra\u00dfen und ganze D\u00f6rfer. Zehntausende Menschen verloren ihren gesamten Besitz. Gemeinsam mit der PRAJANA MISSION organisierte HAND IN HAND mit vielen freiwilligen Helferinnen und Helfern vor Ort Rettungs- und Hilfsprojekte.<\/p>\n

    2018<\/h2>\n

    Nur ein Jahr sp\u00e4ter, im Herbst, wurde der Bundesstaat Kerala von einer Jahrhundertkatastrophe heimgesucht. Mehr als eine Million Menschen waren betroffen und haben in den Fluten alles verloren, was sie zum Leben brauchten: ihr Zuhause, das Vieh, die Ernte. Sie hatten keinen Zugang zu sauberem Wasser und Lebensmitteln. HAND IN HAND leistete umgehend Notfallhilfe.<\/p>\n

    Am 3. Mai, nur wenige Monaten nach der Katastrophe von Kerala, traf ein verheerender Zyklon mit Spitzengeschwindigkeiten zwischen 230 und 300 (!) Stundenkilometern auf die Ostk\u00fcste Odishas und damit auch Puri. Der tropische Sturm \u201eFani\u201d verursachte riesige Verw\u00fcstung und Zerst\u00f6rung.<\/p>\n

    Hunderttausende B\u00e4ume wurden entwurzelt und unz\u00e4hlige strohbedeckte H\u00e4user dem Erdboden gleichgemacht. Elektrische Leitungen und Telefonmasten wurden arg besch\u00e4digt. Viele Wochen geriet das Leben der Bewohner:innen komplett aus den Fugen. Die Knappheit von Essen, Wasser, Elektrizit\u00e4t und Medizin verursachte eine katastrophale Situation, in der Menschen verzweifelt auf Hilfe angewiesen waren.<\/p>\n

    Unsere HCHC Gesundheitszentren sorgten f\u00fcr die medizinische und materielle Versorgung in Balighai und in dessen unmittelbaren Umgebung.     Nachdem im September im Kendrapara-Distrikt von Odisha der Brahmani Fluss \u00fcber die Ufern trat und die umliegenden D\u00f6rfer \u00fcberflutete, startete die PRAJANA MISSION abermals rasch Hilfsprojekte. Senf\u00f6l, Getreidepulver, Decken etc. konnten an rund 300 Betroffene der D\u00f6rfer ausgegeben werden, ebenso Nahrung f\u00fcr rund 3.000 K\u00fche.<\/p>\n

    2020 – 2022<\/h2>\n

    Die Corona-Krise stellte schlie\u00dflich alles in den Schatten, was HAND IN HAND zuvor an Katastrophen in Odisha erlebt hatte. Nach 20 Jahren wirkungsvoller Hilfe sah sich die Organisation pl\u00f6tzlich mit schierer Hilflosigkeit konfrontiert. Ohnm\u00e4chtig musste man mitansehen, wie im Balashram auf Anweisung der Regierung ein Kind nach dem anderen von Angeh\u00f6rigen abgeholt und so zur\u00fcck in die extreme Armut gesto\u00dfen wurde. Die Schule musste schlie\u00dfen, und die Kinder mussten erneut erleben, wie zerbrechlich Geborgenheit in unserer Welt geworden ist. Die Sorge aller im Balashram und bei HAND IN HAND um ihre kleinen Sch\u00fctzlinge wuchs mit jedem Tag. \u201eWo schlafen sie? Haben sie genug zu essen? Sind sie wohlauf, und werden sie wieder zur\u00fcckkommen k\u00f6nnen?\u201c Das waren die bangen Fragen, die sich alle stellten.<\/p>\n

    Besonders die zweite Corona-Welle im April 2021 traf das Land mit unvorstellbarer Wucht und H\u00e4rte. Aufgrund der fehlenden medizinischen Versorgung stieg die Zahl der Infektionen explosionsartig und mit ihnen die Zahl der Toten. Auf den Markt zu gehen, um Lebensmittel zu besorgen, wurde zu einer ernsten Gefahr. Doch je gr\u00f6\u00dfer die Schwierigkeiten wurden, umso mehr Spenden erreichten HAND IN HAND. Lebensmittellieferungen konnten organisiert werden, und die Gesundheitszentren in Arua und Jagatpur verf\u00fcgten nun auch \u00fcber die Mittel, wirksame Pr\u00e4ventions- und Hygienema\u00dfnahmen umzusetzen. Sie waren mit der Hilfe von HAND IN HAND sogar in der Lage, \u00f6ffentliche Krankenh\u00e4user mit Sauerstoffkonzentratoren zu beliefen. Dies \u00fcberzeugte schlie\u00dflich die Beh\u00f6rden, sodass die Kinder fr\u00fchzeitig die Erlaubnis erhielten, in den Balashram zur\u00fcckzukehren. Nach zwei \u00fcberaus schwierigen Jahren konnte der Schulbetrieb wieder aufgenommen werden.<\/p>\n

              2008<\/h2>

              In September 2008, incessant rains caused the swelling water of the mighty Mahanadi River and its tributaries to overflow its banks. Vast areas of Odisha were engulfed, claiming at least 29 lives and affecting about four million people in 18 of the state's 30 districts. Of these, more than 500,000 people have been displaced from their villages. The Prajnana Mission organized relief efforts and provided people with first necessities.<\/p>

              2013<\/h2>

              The gigantic cyclone \u201cPhailin\u201c made landfall on the east coast of India on October 12th with wind speeds of up to 200 km\/h. The cyclone, which according to meteorologists was \u201cvery severe\u201d, caused large-scale flooding and extensive damage. The situation was aggravated dramatically by the heavy rains.<\/p>

              Despite the largest mass evacuation in the history of India, the tropical cyclone still claimed a few casualties. The roofs of many houses have been blown away by the storm, and thousands of huts have been washed away by the floods. In many areas, power and telephone lines have been cut.<\/p>

              Representatives of Prajnana Mission have been present in areas where their help is most needed and have done their best to alleviate the difficulties which the victims have had to face. The poor, especially are suffering in the aftermath of the disaster, so Prajnana Mission is providing daily medical aid, free of charge, in health camps. Veterinarian camps have also been established for the animals which have been affected.<\/p>

              An unusually powerful cyclone, with top speeds between 230 and 300 km per hour, struck the East coast of Odisha, where Puri is located, on 3 May 2019. The tropical storm \u201cFani\u201d caused huge devastation and destruction. Hundreds of thousands of trees were uprooted, and many straw-covered houses were destroyed, and electrical, as well as phone masts, were severely damaged. For over a month, the lives of people were highly impacted. Shortages of food, water, electricity and medicines, created a catastrophic situation where people were anxiously waiting for help.<\/p>

              Prajnana Mission with the Health Center in Balighai provided medical and material assistance in the immediate surrounding areas. Mobile Medical Camps were held in 12 locations in Odisha, which provided medical assistance to 1,200 people. Prajnana Mission distributed relief supplies in 13 villages, being able to support and aid 500 poor families.<\/p>

              A house complex was constructed for the afflicted families.\u00a0<\/p>

              2020<\/h2>

              In September 2020, relief operations were organized after the Brahmani River overflowed its banks in the Kendrapara district of Odisha and flooded the surrounding villages. Relief items such as mustard oil, cereal powder, blankets, etc. were distributed to around 300 people in the affected villages. Cow feed for nearly 3,000 cows was also distributed in the surrounding villages.\u00a0<\/p>
