Hariharananda Balashram Internatsschule<\/h2>\n

Vorgeschichte: 1999 erlebte Odisha, ein \u00f6stlicher K\u00fcstenstaat Indiens, den schlimmsten Zyklon seiner Geschichte, der viele Landstriche verw\u00fcstete. Tausende Opfer starben, unz\u00e4hlige Ansiedlungen wurden buchst\u00e4blich weggefegt und Millionen Menschen verloren ihr Heim und ihre ohnedies oft karge Landwirtschaft. Noch Jahre sp\u00e4ter waren die Nachwirkungen dieser Verw\u00fcstung sp\u00fcrbar, insbesondere durch die vielen Kinder, die als Waisen und infolge der Katastrophe in extremer Armut lebten, abgeschnitten von F\u00fcrsorge und jeglicher Schulbildung.
Um diesen und anderen bed\u00fcrftigen Kindern wirkungsvoll zu helfen, gr\u00fcndete die PRAJNANA MISSION mit Unterst\u00fctzung von HAND IN HAND die Hariharananda Balashram Internatsschule. Diese bietet in Armut lebenden, vernachl\u00e4ssigten Kindern von Odisha ein sicheres Zuhause, eine gute Gesundheitsversorgung und hervorragende (Aus-)Bildung. Sie bekommen Liebe, Geborgenheit und eine solide Grundlage f\u00fcr ihre Zukunft, die sie aus dem verheerenden Kreislauf von Armut und Abh\u00e4ngigkeit befreien soll.<\/p>\n

Auf einer Fl\u00e4che von rund zw\u00f6lf Hektar in dem Dorf Pattamundai befinden sich die Wohn- und Schulgeb\u00e4ude, ein kleines Krankenhaus, Sport- und Spielpl\u00e4tze, eine Landwirtschaft und vieles mehr f\u00fcr die Rundumversorgung der Kinder und Jugendlichen. Die Mitarbeiter:innen im Balashram sind buchst\u00e4blich rund um die Uhr f\u00fcr die emotionalen und sozialen Bed\u00fcrfnisse der Kinder da. Und so ist der Balashram f\u00fcrwahr ein Ort der N\u00e4chstenliebe, wo bed\u00fcrftige Kinder mit F\u00fcrsorge und Mitgef\u00fchl aufwachsen und sich zu selbstbewu\u00dften und verantwortungsvollen Mitgliedern der Gesellschaft entwickeln k\u00f6nnen, ganz nach dem Motto des Balashrams: \u201eMake your Dream a Reality\u201c \u2013 \u201eLass Deinen Traum Wirklichkeit werden.\u201c<\/p>\n

    Chrysalis<\/h2>\n

    Das Wort \u201eChrysalis\u201c kommt von dem griechischen Wort \u201echrysos\u201c (\u201eGold\u201c) und bezieht sich auf die goldene Puppe, die in einen Schmetterling verwandelt wird. Im \u00fcbertragenen Sinn beginnt auch f\u00fcr die Absolventinnen und Absolventen der Balashram Internatsschule ein neues, selbstbestimmtes Leben. Und f\u00fcr den erfolgreichen \u00dcbergang in dieses werden sie im Rahmen des Balashram-Folgeprojekts \u201eChrysalis\u201c begleitet. Schon w\u00e4hrend ihrer Balashram-Zeit wurden die Sch\u00fcler:innen ganz nach ihren individuellen F\u00e4higkeiten gef\u00f6rdert. Nun, nach Abschluss der 10. Klasse, erhalten sie bei ihrer Berufsausbildung bzw. ihrem weiterf\u00fchrenden Studium abermals Unterst\u00fctzung.<\/p>\n

    So ist seit 2017 in der Balashram-Schule eine Ausbildung bis zur Sekundarstufe 2 (Klasse 11 und Klasse 12) in den Bereichen Naturwissenschaften und Geisteswissenschaften zugelassen, was ein wichtiger Meilenstein in der Entwicklung des Campus ist. Au\u00dferdem ist die Schule laufend bestrebt, Kooperationen mit Unternehmen aufzubauen, aktuell sowohl in Indien als auch in den USA. Das erm\u00f6glicht es, den Jugendlichen vielversprechende Praktika und sichere Ausbildungspl\u00e4tze anzubieten.<\/p>\n

    Nachhilfezentrum Arua<\/h2>\n

    Das Nachhilfezentrum in Arua wurde im Februar 2022 als \u201eLife Skills and Community Development Project\u201c er\u00f6ffnet. Es bietet Nachhilfe f\u00fcr die Kinder der D\u00f6rfer Arua, Kadliban, Hatapatana, Keshpur and Nuapatana, um die dort sehr schlechte Qualit\u00e4t der Schulen auszugleichen und so das Leistungsniveau der Sch\u00fcler:innen zu heben. Um die 240 Kinder und Jugendliche besuchen bereits nach so kurzer Zeit dieses kleine Zentrum, das vormittags Nachhilfeunterricht f\u00fcr die j\u00fcngeren Kinder und abends f\u00fcr die Sch\u00fcler:innen h\u00f6herer Schulstufen anbietet.<\/p>\n

    Die Eltern, die h\u00e4ufig keine oder nur eine sehr geringe Schulbildung erfahren haben, werden aktiv einbezogen. In regelm\u00e4\u00dfigen Abst\u00e4nden finden Treffen mit diesen statt, mit dem Ziel, ihnen die Bildungsreise ihrer Kinder n\u00e4her zu bringen. \u00dcberdies wird jeden Sonntag ein Unterricht in \u201eEthik\u201c angeboten, den etwa 60 bis 70 Teilnehmer:innen besuchen. Absolventinnen und Absolventen des Hariharananda Balashrams unterrichten in ihrer freien Zeit im Nachhilfezentrum. Und h\u00e4ufig besuchen pensionierte Lehrer:innen aus der Umgebung das Zentrum und unterst\u00fctzen ebenfalls den Unterricht. Die Resonanz der Dorfbewohner:innen ist sehr positiv. Die Eltern der Nachhilfe-Sch\u00fcler:innen zahlen je nach M\u00f6glichkeit einen kleinen Beitrag, um die Stromkosten und die Pr\u00fcfungsgeb\u00fchren abdecken zu k\u00f6nnen.<\/p>\n

    Die Ausweitung des Balashram Gartens<\/h4>\n

    Im Balashram ist die Natur und deren Bewahrung von immenser Wichtigkeit. Das zeigt sich schon darin, dass bereits die Sch\u00fcler:innen der Unterstufe ein tiefes Bewusstsein daf\u00fcr entwickeln. Alle Altersgruppen diskutieren in den Klassen und au\u00dferhalb Umweltfragen und ihre Bedeutung f\u00fcr die Region und den ganzen Erdball. In praktischen F\u00e4chern lernen sie Pflanzen und Kr\u00e4uter anzupflanzen. Dies erfolgt f\u00fcr jede Klasse auf eigenen Feldern oder Gartenabschnitten, f\u00fcr die die Kinder dann selber sorgen m\u00fcssen.<\/p>\n

    Der Bau einer Balashram-Farm<\/h4>\n

    F\u00fcr die Versorgung der Bewohner:innen des Balashrams mit Milchprodukten f\u00fcr den t\u00e4glichen Bedarf sowie die Erhaltung der indischen Zebu-Rasse entstand am Gel\u00e4nde des Balashrams eine gro\u00dfe Landwirtschaft. 200 K\u00fche und K\u00e4lber leben auf dem schuleigenen Gel\u00e4nde und produzieren gen\u00fcgend Milch, um die Kinder im Hariharananda Balashram mit gesunden Milchprodukten zu versorgen.<\/p>\n

    Die Errichtung einer Biogasanlage<\/h4>\n

    Die 2018 in Betrieb genommene Biogasanlage liefert 80 Prozent des Energiebedarfs im Balashram und wird mit dem Mist der 200 Rinder betrieben. Vor Installierung der Anlage war noch t\u00e4glich f\u00fcr 600 Menschen auf Holz\u00f6fen gekocht worden. Seit Inbetriebnahme der Biogasanlage kann vollst\u00e4ndig auf die Verbrennung von Holz verzichtet werden.<\/p>\n

    Der Bau von Solarpanelen<\/h4>\n

    Das Solarprojekt startete im Dezember 2019 und wird immer weiter ausgebaut. Es hilft, einen zunehmend gro\u00dfen Teil der Stromkosten einsparen.<\/p>\n

    Die Errichtung einer Kl\u00e4ranlage<\/h4>\n

    Eine solche wurde am Schulgel\u00e4nde 2017 zur Reinigung des Abwassers gebaut. Dieses dient anschlie\u00dfend zur Bew\u00e4sserung der Felder. Das Brauchwasser der K\u00fche wiederum wird der G\u00fclle beigemengt, die f\u00fcr die Biogasanlage Verwendung findet. <\/p>\n

    In diesen lernen die Sch\u00fcler:innen des Balashrams Umweltbewusstsein und gr\u00fcne Ideen, die HAND IN HAND und die PRAJNANA MISSION vertreten. Auf diese Weise beginnen sie wie selbstverst\u00e4ndlich, auf die Natur zu achten, ihre Gaben zu lieben und zu sch\u00fctzen. Die Schulleitung organisiert regelm\u00e4\u00dfig Ausfl\u00fcge zu nahegelegenen Naturschutzgebieten, wie dem Bhitarakanika Wildlife Sanctuary, wo die M\u00e4dchen und Buben viel Wissen und Information \u00fcber verschiedene Pflanzen- und Tierarten sammeln.<\/p>\n

    Mit Enthusiasmus und Engagement organisieren die Kinder und Jugendlichen auch selbst kleine Veranstaltungen. In diesen tauschen sie sich mit den Bewohnerinnen und Bewohnern in den nahegelegenen D\u00f6rfern aus. Dabei geht es zum Beispiel um die sparsame Nutzung von Wasser, den Umgang mit Tieren, die Gefahren von Plastik.<\/p>\n

Kinder und Jugendliche ohne ausreichende Schulbildung bekommen hier intensiv Unterst\u00fctzung. Sie lernen aber auch \u201eLife-Skills\u201c, die ihre sozialen Kompetenzen f\u00f6rdern.<\/p>\n

    So werden hier Projekte f\u00fcr die Gemeinschaft entwickelt, wird Hilfsbereitschaft und Dienst am N\u00e4chsten ge\u00fcbt.     Education is an essential element <\/span>in the life of every human being. Through education, we not only acquire skills to earn a living, but also expand our knowledge about our lives and the world around us. Education is a right of all children in India and schools have been established in almost all major villages. Books, clothes and even a midday meal are provided to primary students. Despite enormous <\/span>funds<\/span> spent on improving school infrastructure, the quality of education in schools in smaller villages and low-income areas is extremely poor, so that secondary school students are barely able to understand primary school subjects.<\/span><\/p>\n

    The poor educational level of parents, family conditions and social environment, in addition to the lack of resources, are factors that hinder children\u2018s education. However, the most important factor is the lack of personal attention for the children. The teachers in the schools do not pay attention <\/span>to<\/span> individual instruction. Tutoring is not available in the villages because the villagers cannot afford to pay for it. The gap between rich and poor is thus widening, depriving countless people of any chance to improve their situation or that of their children.<\/span><\/p>\n

    Against this backdrop, we conceptualized the Hariharananda <\/span>Shikshashrams<\/span> project in 2018 \u2013 small village schools in rural and tribal regions of Odisha. In these schools, children receive quality education in Odia language, with a special focus on English. Students are charged a nominal tuition fee which their parents can afford to pay. Each school would have a respective trust (with competent people) to manage the school. Prajnana Mission, in cooperation with HAND IN HAND accompanies the development of the schools as well as the design of the lessons in an advisory capacity.<\/span><\/p>\n

    Currently, the Shikshashram Betakholi school is run in a rented house with three rooms and a dormitory with 62 students from classes Kindergarten to Grade 3. The school has five full-time teachers, one part-time teacher (Art), as well as a caretaker and a field worker.

      Hariharananda Residential Balashram School<\/h2>

      In 1999, Odisha, an eastern coastal state of India, experienced the worst cyclone ever, which devastated the area. Thousands of people died, and many hamlets were washed away, leaving countless people homeless. The economy of this agricultural state was shattered. The aftermath of the devastation was felt years later, with many of the children orphaned and\/or living in severe poverty and deprived of education.<\/p>

      In an effort to provide for the health and education of these children, Prajnana Mission, with the financial support of Hand in Hand, founded Hariharananda Balashram, a home and school for the poor and needy children of Odisha. Its goal is to provide the children with a solid foundation for their future. The Balashram school is spread over twelve acres in the village of Pattamundai and has facilities to provide for the children\u2019s educational, physical, social, and emotional needs. There are science rooms, library, sports rooms, playgrounds, and much more to facilitate their all-round development. Truly, one can say that Hariharananda Balashram is a temple of peace, love and harmony where children are growing and developing with care and compassion.<\/p>

      • The school was founded in 2004.<\/li>
      • Each year, 40 children in need \u2013 between the ages of three and five \u2013 are admitted.<\/li>
      • To date, 564 children have found a protective home at Balashram with free access to quality health care and education.<\/li><\/ul>

        The Balashram school consists of three campuses:<\/p>

        Main Campus:<\/strong> school buildings, girls\u2019 hostel, nursery building, dining hall, gardens, football field, and staff quarters.<\/p>

        Chrysalis<\/h2>

        \u201cChrysalis\u201d stems from the Greek word \u201cchrysos\u201c, meaning \u201cgold\u201c, and refers to the golden pupa which will transform into a butterfly. In the same way, the youngsters shall be escorted on their \u201cflight\u201d into life. In the year 2016 the first batch of students of class 10 graduated from the Balashram school with the secondary education. In order to pursue higher education, including college or professional courses, there is a requirement to have 2 extra years of secondary education, an important stage for which a pass certificate is needed. Hand in Hand\u2019s partner Organization, Prajnana Mission, launched Chrysalis Project in order to support the students in their transition to the next step in life.\u00a0<\/p>

        Since year 2017 in line with Chrysalis Project, Hariharananda Balashram started to offer a new school career in science. Since then, students are able to absolve the 11th and 12th class at the Balashram. After the graduation exam of class 10 students can choose their main subject: if they have an inclination for science, they can continue their studies at the Balashram without the need to go to an outside college as it was the practice before; for those who would like to begin an apprenticeship outside Balashram or who wish to attend the College of Arts, Balashram school is offering support and guidance through Chrysalis Project.\u00a0<\/p>

        Tutoring Center in Arua<\/h2>

        The new Tutoring Centre in Arua offers tutoring classes for the children of the villages of Arua, Kadliban, Hatapatana, Keshpur and Nuapatana, with the aim of raising the children\u2019s educational levels. About 237 students are already attending the Tutoring Centre which offers two shifts, one in the morning and in the evening: Classes I to VI come for tutoring in the morning while students from classes VII to X come in the evening. Graduates of Hariharananda Balashram, who live on the Balashram campus and study in nearby educational institutions under the Chrysalis Project, teach in their free time as tutors in the new Tutoring Centre.<\/p>

        Parents of students who come for tutoring, pay a small fee which covers the electricity costs and the examination fees. Retired government teachers, who live in the villages, visit the Centre frequently and offer suggestions on how to improve teaching for the children. Parents\u2018 meetings are organised at regular intervals with the aim of promoting parents\u2018 understanding of their children\u2018s educational journey. Moreover, an ethics lesson is held every Sunday and is attended by about 60 to 70 children.<\/p>

        The main goal of the Tutoring Centre is to compensate for the poor quality of education in the regular village schools. It wants to help students, who find regular school classes difficult, to understand the basic courses of the lower grades. The tutors try to meet the individual needs of the students and also advise the parents accordingly. The response of the villagers to the Tutoring Centre has been very positive.<\/p>

        Education is an essential element <\/span>in the life of every human being. Through education, we not only acquire skills to earn a living, but also expand our knowledge about our lives and the world around us. Education is a right of all children in India and schools have been established in almost all major villages. Books, clothes and even a midday meal are provided to primary students. Despite enormous <\/span>funds<\/span> spent on improving school infrastructure, the quality of education in schools in smaller villages and low-income areas is extremely poor, so that secondary school students are barely able to understand primary school subjects.<\/span><\/p>

        The poor educational level of parents, family conditions and social environment, in addition to the lack of resources, are factors that hinder children\u2018s education. However, the most important factor is the lack of personal attention for the children. The teachers in the schools do not pay attention <\/span>to<\/span> individual instruction. Tutoring is not available in the villages because the villagers cannot afford to pay for it. The gap between rich and poor is thus widening, depriving countless people of any chance to improve their situation or that of their children.<\/span><\/p>

        Against this backdrop, we conceptualized the Hariharananda <\/span>Shikshashrams<\/span> project in 2018 \u2013 small village schools in rural and tribal regions of Odisha. In these schools, children receive quality education in Odia language, with a special focus on English. Students are charged a nominal tuition fee which their parents can afford to pay. Each school would have a respective trust (with competent people) to manage the school. Prajnana Mission, in cooperation with HAND IN HAND accompanies the development of the schools as well as the design of the lessons in an advisory capacity.<\/span><\/p>

        Currently, the Shikshashram Betakholi school is run in a rented house with three rooms and a dormitory with 62 students from classes Kindergarten to Grade 3. The school has five full-time teachers, one part-time teacher (Art), as well as a caretaker and a field worker.<\/p>
